Burnt my first batch in the new drum roaster, now what?

Got a 1kg drum roaster last month and my third batch hit 25 degrees over my target curve. Beans came out looking like charcoal briquettes, smelled like a campfire that went wrong. I pulled them at first crack plus 90 seconds instead of following the bean temp on the probe. My question is, do you trust the machine's readings or your senses when they disagree, especially on a new setup? Anyone else had to adjust their whole approach after a bad first few roasts?

My buddy Rick got a 2kg drum last spring and his first three batches were so dark they were almost oily. He kept trusting the probe and ignoring what his nose was telling him. Finally he just stopped following the machine entirely for batch four, watched the beans change color and listened for the cracks, and pulled them about 20 seconds after first crack started rolling. They came out perfect, medium brown with that sweet smell. Turns out his probe was reading about 15 degrees low because it wasn't seated deep enough in the drum. He recalibrated it after that and now he checks both, but he always lets his senses overrule the numbers when they argue.
