Why does nobody talk about bartering for firewood in NH?
My neighbor in Concord traded me 2 cords of seasoned oak for fixing his snowblower, which would've cost me $600 to buy. Anyone else here trading skills instead of cash to get through winter?
The tax angle is what gets me. Bartering is great until you realize the IRS wants its cut of the fair market value of what you traded, so that $600 snowblower job is technically taxable income even though no cash changed hands. Most people doing this in NH have no clue, and honestly neither did I until my accountant mentioned it last year. There's a reason folks keep quiet about it, because the second it becomes a "thing" people start wanting paperwork and permits.
