Vent: Tried propane camping stove vs my old white gas one. Solo stove wins.
Bought a cheap propane stove from Walmart for fishing trips. Lightweight sure. But that thing couldn't boil water in a breeze. Switched back to my old Coleman white gas stove for a trip up near Lake Winnipesaukee last month. Boiled my coffee in 4 minutes flat. Propane canisters are also $6 a pop now. White gas is cheaper per gallon. Anyone else ditch the fancy new stuff for the old gear?

Is it really that deep though? I mean sure, the wind killed your boil time, but that happens with pretty much any stove unless you're running a jetboil or something. My buddy uses one of those cheap Ozark Trail propane stoves year round and he's not dead yet, his coffee gets hot enough. I guess if you're trying to boil a whole pot of pasta in a gale force wind maybe the white gas wins, but for just heating up water for morning coffee I don't see the big deal. A little bit of patience and you're fine.

That old Coleman white gas stove is hard to beat once you get the hang of it. I had a similar experience with a little propane burner I brought up to the White Mountains last fall. Couldn't get water to a rolling boil in the wind no matter what I did, just sat there simmering forever. Dug my dad's old Svea 123 out of the garage on a whim and that little brass thing boiled a pot for my dehydrated stew in no time. There's something about the simplicity of the older gear that just works when you need it to.
