Tried foraging for mushrooms on a whim and didn't die, but barely

I always thought people who picked random stuff in the woods were asking for trouble, especially after hearing horror stories about toxic false morels. Last fall near my place in Western Mass, I grabbed a field guide and spent three hours hunting for chicken of the woods on a dead oak. Cooked a small piece in butter, waited 20 minutes, and honestly it tasted like the best chicken sandwich I ever had. But now I'm paranoid I'll mix up a lookalike next time, anyone got a foolproof tip for telling the good stuff from the bad?

Get a local foraging group on Facebook and cross-check everything twice.

Did @parkerh38 just volunteer to be my personal mushroom babysitter if I eat the wrong one? 'Cause I'd feel way better knowing someone's got my back if I'm seeing colors later.
