Tried drying herbs in my attic this summer and nearly started a fire

I was in Worcester hanging up bundles of mint and thyme from my garden, and the heat built up so bad the bulbs in my little attic fan started smoking. Had to yank everything down and switch to a wire rack in the basement instead, anyone else almost burn the house down trying to save a few bucks on spices?

Did you tie the bundles too tight? Airflow matters more than heat.

Learned that lesson myself last summer when my lavender bundles turned into a smokey mess and the fire alarm went off. Now I just dry everything on window screens in the spare bedroom, much safer.
