TIL a guy at the transfer station in Brattleboro made me stop hauling my trash to the curb every week
I used to drag two big bags to the curb every single week like clockwork, and last Saturday I ran into this older guy at the Brattleboro transfer station who saw my bins and asked why I was paying for weekly pickup when I only put out 11 pounds of actual garbage. I started counting it out and he was right, most of my bag was food scraps and cardboard, and once I separated those out my real trash dropped to maybe one small bag every two weeks. He showed me his setup, just a five gallon bucket with a lid for scraps and a little wire bin for recycling in the garage, nothing fancy at all. So I called my hauler and switched to the on call plan, which costs me $35 a month now instead of the $78 I was paying for weekly. The scraps go in a tumbler I got used for $40 and the cardboard goes in the burn barrel for kindling, and honestly the garage smells better than it did before. It's a small thing but $43 a month is $516 a year, which in this state is real money. Anyone else switch their trash service around after a random conversation, or am I the last one holding the bag on this?
