Three years of buying local firewood and I'm thinking about giving it up
Three years ago I started getting all my firewood from a guy in Keene, New Hampshire. He said it was seasoned oak and maple, $250 a cord. First year it burned fine, but last winter I had to dry every split for two months before it would even catch. This year the load had more bark beetles than I've seen in my whole life. I'm spending more time cleaning the stovepipe than actually heating my house. The price went up to $300 a cord for this year and I'm not sure it's worth the hassle anymore. Has anyone else switched to a different heat source after getting tired of dealing with local firewood suppliers?

Man I feel your pain. My last load of "seasoned" wood was so green it practically had leaves still on it. Pretty sure I spent more money on chimney cleaner than I did on the actual firewood that year. Even got a beetle outbreak in my woodpile that made me feel like a wanna-be entomologist instead of a guy trying to stay warm. Switched to a pellet stove last fall and honestly the worst part so far is just lugging the bags from the car. Not having to worry about bark bugs or soot buildup every weekend is worth the switch.

You ever had a friend who got so fed up with something they just snapped? My buddy Tom was the same way with his firewood guy up in Vermont. Last winter he pulled a split out of his stack and a whole family of earwigs came crawling out... scared his wife so bad she made him switch to a propane fireplace. Now he just sits there pressing a button and complaining about the cost.
