Thought replacing my own well pump would save big. Took me 13 hours instead of 2.

Figured I could swap out the old submersible pump in my well near Keene, NH over a Saturday. No way, that thing was buried under 80 feet of rusted pipe and mud. Had to borrow a pulley rig from a guy on Route 9 and practically lost a knuckle getting the coupling off. Anyone else ever tackle a well pump solo and totally misjudge the time?

Read an article claiming most well pumps are held in by spite and rusted hope.

Ended up doing something similar with my pressure tank last spring. Thought, "How hard can it be?" Three trips to the hardware store and a busted knuckle later, I was covered in silt and questioning every decision that led me to that moment. That coupling getting rusted on is the real enemy, nothing like fighting a piece of pipe that hasn't moved in 15 years at the bottom of a dark hole. At least your Saturday turned into a full weekend project, now you've got a story to tell every time someone brings up wells. Watch your back the next few days, you'll feel muscles you didn't know you had after wrestling that thing out.
