That time a $40 wood stove thermometer saved my whole heating season

Last month I was burning way more firewood than usual and couldnt figure out why. My stove was running okay but the house felt colder and I was going through a cord every 2 weeks which is insane for this time of year. Turns out I was running it too low and creosote was building up fast inside the chimney. I grabbed a cheap magnetic stove thermometer at a hardware store in Manchester for like $40 and stuck it on the pipe. Now I keep the temp in the 300 to 450 range and my wood usage dropped by almost a third. Anyone else use one of these things or do you just eyeball the flames and hope for the best?
