Spent 4 hours trying to split a single maple log with a maul before a random guy at a yard sale in Conway told me my wedge was dull
I was at the Lakes Region dump swap shop last fall and this old timer saw me struggling, handed me his own wedge and said 'try this one' - first swing and it split clean. Never replaced my wedge before that, who else has been using dull tools without realizing it?

Actually the real sleeper issue here isn't just the wedge being dull, it's that most people don't know you can sharpen them with a basic hand file in like 2 minutes. A buddy of mine spent three seasons blaming his technique before I showed him the angle on his wedge was totally wrong. Once you hit that sweet spot it's like the wood wants to split itself lol.

What's the magic angle you aim for when filing? Tried sharpening mine once but I think I messed it up cause it felt worse after. Would love to know the exact degree you target so I don't end up like your buddy.
