Question about drying firewood faster in a damp New England spring

Last March I cut down a big maple near my place in Worcester, split it all, and stacked it in my backyard. After three rainy months it was still reading 35% moisture on my meter. I tried covering the top with a tarp but left the sides open, and it dried way faster than my neighbor's stack that gets full sun. Anyone have luck with other methods for seasoning wood in this climate?

Full sun's overrated, I'll take a soggy tarp over sunshine any day.

Last fall I had this problem with some oak I cut in November. Ended up building a simple lean-to out of scrap plywood and 2x4s. Left the front wide open for air. Dried way faster than the stuff I had just sitting on pallets with a tarp. @amy975 is totally right about full sun not being everything. My neighbor swears by his solar kiln setup but that's too much work for me.
