Put a wood stove insert in my drafty 1800s cape in southern NH last October and just tallied up my propane usage, down 73% compared to last winter.

I was honestly just hoping to shave a few hundred bucks off my heating bill but the thing cranks out so much heat I barely touched the furnace after December, has anyone else in old New England houses had their propane or oil bills drop by half or more after adding a secondary heat source?

Hell yeah, my oil bill basically disappeared after I tossed a pellet stove in the basement.

@phoenixp90 basically said the same thing happened to them, and it's crazy how much a secondary heat source can carry the load. Even just running the wood stove hard on weekends keeps the whole house warm enough that the furnace barely kicks on at all (like, maybe once or twice a day tops). It's almost like having a free heat source when you factor in the propane savings.
