Neighbor's comment about my wood pile changed my whole approach

Last November, my next door guy in Keene takes one look at my stacked firewood and says, 'you're drying it wrong.' I was furious. I'd cut, split, and stacked everything in neat rows against the shed. He pointed out I had the bark side facing up, which traps moisture in the wet New England air. He showed me his own pile, all bark down, with a gap between the stacks for airflow. I switched half my pile over that weekend, and by January it burned noticeably hotter and with way less hissing. My old stuff took twice as long to season. Anyone else get a tip from a neighbor that made you eat crow?

Swapped mine to bark down last fall after the same talk. Took a season to see it, but yeah, that dude was right.
