My wood splitter gave up right before a big storm

Last Tuesday my 15 year old hydraulic splitter finally seized up, right before that nor'easter hit. I had a whole cord of maple still in rounds and no way to crack it. Ended up borrowing a neighbor's maul and spent two evenings swinging it, which honestly was good for the shoulders but bad for my time. Anyone else running into gear dying at the worst possible moment, or is it just me?
