My neighbor's $340 electric bill made me check mine, and the number that scared me was 19
Talked to my neighbor in Nashua last Tuesday while he was dragging his trash bin out, and he mentioned his January electric bill hit $340. I laughed and said mine was fine, then I actually went and read the thing. Turns out 19 degrees is where my heat pump stops being cheap and starts using the backup strips, which run at like 3x the cost per hour. My bill didn't look bad last month only because it was mild, and the forecast for the next two weeks is not mild. So I spent Saturday sealing the attic hatch and setting the thermostat back to 64 at night instead of leaving it at 68. If you have a heat pump and never looked at the outdoor temp cutoff setting, go find it in the app or manual this weekend, because you might be heating your house with the most expensive coil in it. Anyone know if it hurts the compressor to lock out the strips completely and just let the house drift down a few degrees?
