I finally followed that old farmer's advice about mulching with hay instead of bark

My neighbor Ray up in Littleton told me last fall to put down straw hay instead of expensive bark mulch, and I figured what the heck. Saved me about $80 on my garden beds and the weeds barely popped up this spring. Anyone else get handed surprisingly good advice from someone random?

Ray's tip is a lifesaver, I feel you on that. Switching to hay saved my back and my wallet too, best random advice I ever took.

Ray's tip about hay instead of bark is solid. I switched last year and my tomatoes went nuts. The hay breaks down slower than you'd think and keeps the soil cool way into August.
