Had a talk with an old timer at the transfer station that shifted my thinking

Last Saturday in Concord I was dropping off scrap metal when a guy in his 70s pointed at my stack of old copper pipe and said I was throwing away a small fortune by not cleaning it right. He spent ten minutes showing me how to strip the fittings with a $12 tool instead of just letting the yard take it dirty. Anyone else had a random stranger give you advice that actually paid off?

That old timer saying you're "throwing away a small fortune" hits hard. I had a guy at the dump tell me to stop throwing my old car batteries in the scrap pile because they pay out way better if you take them to a recycler that buys them whole. Saved me like $40 on the first one. Another time a lady told me to keep the brass valves on old plumbing instead of cutting them off. Small stuff adds up fast.

Honestly, is it really that serious though? Like yeah saving $40 is nice and all, but are we really gonna act like hauling old batteries and brass valves around is some life changing strategy? Feels like a lot of effort for what amounts to a dinner out.
