Everybody says you need a generator up here, but 14 months on solar and a wood stove has me disagreeing
I keep hearing from folks around central Maine that you can't make it through winter without a generator, and I just don't buy it anymore. When we moved onto this place 14 months ago the first thing people told me was to get a Generac, and I almost did, but instead we put that money into 6 panels, a small battery bank, and a decent wood stove. The difference between last January and this one is night and day. Last year we were burning through about $240 a month on propane and still sitting in the dark every time a line went down, and this year the stove handles the heat and the panels cover the lights, the fridge, and the well pump. We lost power for 9 hours in that ice storm in March and never noticed except the internet went out. I'm not saying solar is free, it sure wasn't, but the generator crowd acts like it's impossible up here and it just isn't. What's your setup actually costing you per month in the cold months, and did anyone else skip the generator and regret it or not?
