I figured a $40 dash cam was junk, then saw the clip my insurance guy pulled from a $28 one
My brother in law grabbed a cheap dash cam off a clearance rack in Amarillo last month and I gave him a hard time about it, figured the video would be mush. Then his truck got rear ended at a red light and his insurance guy pulled the plate number and the other driver admitting fault right off the footage. My $40 one from two years back had a license plate that looked like a smudge when I checked my own card. Now I'm wondering what the cheap ones do that mine doesn't, so if you run one under $50, how clear is your night footage when a plate is 20 feet out?

A $28 cam catching a plate at 20 feet at night sounds like good luck more than proof that cheap cams are secretly great. Most of those budget ones have tiny sensors that turn into a mess the second it gets dark, and one good clip does not mean the next guy gets the same result. I would check a few real night clips before buying into the hype.
