Actually, they don't figure it out, pruning just moves energy.

It's not just energy, @caleb826, pruning makes room for new growth.

That "explosive blooms" result is so true. I was always scared to cut anything back in case it hurt the plant, but that fear just held it back. Sometimes they need that hard reset to really figure out how to grow.
