PSA: I wasted $45 on a fancy potting soil mix that nearly killed my succulents

I bought this premium cactus blend from a local nursery in Austin for $45 and it held way too much moisture. My Echeveria started rotting within 2 weeks because it was basically mud. I mixed in some extra perlite and pumice myself, cost me like $8 total, and now my plants are thriving. Anybody else fall for the expensive bagged soil trap?

Bought a bag of that fancy "orchid bark" once for like $30 and it was basically just wood chips with mold already growing in it. The guy at the store told me it was the best thing for my epiphytic plants and I felt like a sucker dumping it into my pots. Mixed that stuff with some coconut coir from the hardware store, cost me maybe $12 total, and now my orchids are actually blooming instead of rotting. It's wild how these boutique brands slap a premium label on something and people like us just hand over our cash thinking it'll make a difference. Feels like half this hobby is just learning what not to waste money on.
