Found a cheap trick for saving my indoor ferns during winter dry air

I live in Minnesota and every January my Boston ferns start looking sad and crispy no matter how much I mist them. A few weeks ago I saw a tip online about putting a shallow tray of pebbles and water under the pot. I tried it with a $3 baking dish from the dollar store and some river stones. After just two weeks the new fronds are coming in green and not brown at the tips. Has anyone else had luck with this method or do you do something else for humidity?

Bought one of those cheap pebble trays years ago for my ferns and it worked okay but then my cat figured out it was basically a water bowl and knocked the whole thing over three times. Now I just keep a humidifier running near my plants during winter and it does a better job honestly. The pebble tray method is solid for small spaces though if you don't have a cat that's a jerk.
