Finally grew a decent tomato in Seattle after 3 years of trying
I switched from a standard soil mix to a 5-1-1 gritty blend for my container plants this spring and the difference has been night and day, has anyone else had better luck with coarse mixes up here?

Game changer" is a stretch. My standard bagged mix works just fine up here.

Oh man, congrats on finally getting that tomato! I feel your pain, it took me forever too (like 4 years before I got something worth eating). I switched to a really chunky mix last season and honestly it was a total game changer for drainage up here. The Seattle clay is just too heavy and wet for containers, you know? I use mostly perlite and bark fines now with just a little peat and compost, and my plants don't get that sad yellowing or root rot anymore. It also seems to help the soil warm up faster in spring, which is big for us. Hope that helps you get even more tomatoes this year!
