Warning: I switched from PVA to wheat paste on my last 3 rebinds and now I can't go back
For years I used PVA on everything because it grabs fast and sets up quick, but a binder in Richmond showed me his wheat paste setup and it changed how I work. PVA stays stiff and crackly on old hinges, while paste flexes with the paper and lets you re-position before it dries. I redid a 1912 dictionary for a customer and the spine actually opened flat instead of fighting me. Downside is the drying time, I had to let each project sit under weight for a full day. Anyone else dealing with the paste vs PVA thing or am I just slow on the uptake?

Man, I had a similar thing happen with flour paste when I was fixing up an old family bible, but the real problem was the mice getting into my paste pot overnight. Left it uncovered on the bench like an idiot and woke up to little tracks all through it. Now I keep everything in a sealed jar, and honestly the extra wait time doesn't bug me near as much as scrubbing mouse prints off my bench did.
