That customer who handed me a paperback held together with tape

Had a guy walk into my shop last month in Portland, carrying this beat up paperback that was literally in three pieces. He asked me to rebind it, but got mad when I quoted him $45 because 'it's just a small book.' Said he could do it himself with duct tape and glue from the dollar store. I told him good luck, and he stormed out. Anyone else get folks who think binding is just slapping some adhesive on a spine?
