Spent a whole Tuesday fighting a ghost tear on a 19th century folio, then realized my press was off by a hair.

I was ready to toss the whole project after the third redo, but shimming the press with a piece of cardstock fixed it instantly, has anyone else had a tiny alignment issue ruin hours of work?

Oh man, "off by a hair" is the whole mood of restoration work. I once spent a solid 4 hours chasing a ghost image on a print that turned out to be a single loose screw on the press bed. Felt like the universe was messing with me. Cardstock shimming is the most elegant hack though, I've done the same thing with a torn piece of masking tape in a pinch. Makes you wonder how much of this job is just improvising with office supplies.

Did you try setting the press on a level table or was it just the paper throwing it off?
