I always thought you had to press signatures bone dry before sewing, and I'd been doing it that way since I started. Then last month I took a workshop from a guy named Harold in Portland who's been binding since 1962, and he watched me press for like 2 minutes before he said 'you're crushing the grain and starving the spine.' He showed me how to press with barely damp boards and let it rest 12 hours, and my last 5 books have opened flat for the first time ever. Has anyone else had a teacher flip their whole process like that?
