Shoutout to that bookbinder in Portland who uses PVA glue for everything
Visited a shop in Portland last weekend, guy there swore by PVA glue for all his bindings. Said regular hide glue is outdated. I think he's wrong. Hide glue gives you that working time and reversibility you can't get with PVA. Tried his method on a small journal, the pages felt stiff and off. Am I missing something about modern adhesives or is hide glue still the standard for good reason?

I think he's wrong" is where I land too. Reminds me of how everyone these days wants one tool to do everything. My neighbor uses one of those all-in-one cleaning sprays on his granite countertops, his wood floors, and his car interior. Sure it works okay, but nothing's getting cleaned the right way. PVA is fine for some stuff but treating it like a universal fix is just lazy. Hide glue's been around this long for a reason.
