Picked waxed linen thread over synthetic for my first coptic stitch journal and now I'm second guessing myself
Last month I finally worked up the nerve to try a coptic stitch binding on a journal I made for my sister's birthday. I stood in the aisle at my local craft store in Portland for like 20 minutes holding two spools, one was waxed linen at $12 and the other was a synthetic thread at $6. I went with the linen because an old bookbinder at a flea market told me once that natural thread grips the paper better and ages nicer. The sewing itself went okay, but about a week later I noticed the thread was swelling up a little in the humid weather we've been having here. The pages still turn fine and my sister says she loves it, but I keep wondering if the synthetic would have held its shape better long term. I used a 4 needle setup on 6 signatures and the tension felt good while I was working. Now I'm sitting on 5 more signatures worth of paper and I can't decide if I should redo it or just move on to the next project. Has anyone else switched between these two and noticed a real difference after a year or two?
