Overheard a binder at a shop talk about using book cloth wrong for years

I was dropping off a stack of signatures at a bindery in Burlington last Thursday and heard one of the older guys say he never bothers to line his book cloth before using it on hardcovers. That got me thinking about how I always add a thin backing layer to keep the glue from seeping through and messing up the grain. It made me wonder if I'm overcomplicating things or if he's just lucky with thicker cloths. Has anyone else skipped the lining step and still gotten clean results?

Oh totally, I've done the same thing for years and it's saved me so many headaches.

Ha yeah, same here-my lazy brain thanks me every time I don't have to redo the whole thing!
