I thought Japanese paper was just a hype thing until I tried some from a shop in Kyoto

Yeah, the "just a hype thing" line is spot on. My buddy brought back some paper from a trip and I didn't get it either. Then he showed me a watercolor he did on it, and the way the color sat on the surface was completely different. It didn't soak in and go dull, it stayed bright and crisp. Changed my whole view on it. That stuff has a real purpose.

Right? It's wild how the right tools can totally change your work...

What's the main difference you noticed? I had the same thought until I tried writing on some. The texture gives your lines a certain feel that cheap paper just can't match. It's not about being fancy, it's about how the material works with your hand or your brush. That quality changes the whole experience.
