Found an old 1970s bookbinding manual at a thrift store in St. Paul

Tbh I was just flipping through it for the vintage look but it had a section on using actual animal glue for spine reinforcements. Didnt realize people still used that stuff back then. Anyone ever try hide glue on a modern project or is it just a museum piece now?

Oh, hide glue is absolutely still a thing! I picked up a little pot of it for a small furniture repair last year and was surprised how well it worked. The smell takes some getting used to, but it's really strong for joints and dries clear enough.

Hide glue is a classic for a reason, honestly. That smell is a bit rough though, like old bones or something.

Oh man, my buddy tried hide glue once and his whole shop smelled like dead horses for a week.
