Chose a Coptic stitch over a case binding for my mom's 40th anniversary book, still wondering if I made the right call
My mom's 40th anniversary was in June and I had to pick between a Coptic stitch or a traditional case binding for the photo book I made her. I went with Coptic because she likes flat pages, but the spine has a slight wobble now that bugs me every time I see it on her shelf in Rochester. The case binding would have been sturdier but she never would've opened it flat. Anyone else run into this, and do you go for display or for use?
Notice this same tradeoff everywhere lately, like with my kitchen knives. The pretty wooden one looks great on the rack but needs babying, while the ugly plastic handle one gets used daily and never quits. Or think about shoes, the fancy pair that sits in the closet vs the beat up sneakers by the door. We keep buying things for how they look on display instead of how they actually work in our hands. Your mom gets flat pages every time she opens that book, which means she actually opens it. That wobble is just the price of something being used instead of admired.
