Wasted $40 on a book club subscription box that was all hype

Signed up for a monthly book club box that promised rare first editions and author notes. Got two mass market paperbacks with a cheap bookmark and a stale tea bag. Anyone else get burned by those curated subscription things?

Yeah I tried a few of those boxes and honestly it felt like throwing money away most months. The one time I got something decent was a signed copy of a book I actually wanted, but that was pure luck. Now I just preorder the books I know I'll like and skip the mystery completely.
