Your point on "just in case" items is spot on, so I add a rule to donate anything unused for six months.

Yeah, the six month rule really helps with mental clutter too... that "maybe later" guilt just disappears when you decide ahead of time.

That basement clean-out book really highlights the keep or toss struggle. I always start by asking if each item has a real use or just sentimental hold. Letting go of the "just in case" items often frees up the most space.
