Unpopular opinion: our club's rule against picking a book over 600 pages nearly killed our January meeting
We set that rule two years ago because three people kept showing up with 900 page bricks and nobody finished them, so we capped picks at 600 pages. Last month the vote tied between a 580 page novel and a 610 page memoir, and I spent two full club meetings plus a week of group chat arguing about whether the memoir counted, since technically the story ends at page 590 and the rest is notes. Half of us said the rule is about reading time, not page count, and the other half said a rule is a rule or else why have one. It took almost 3 weeks to settle and honestly the book was fine. So do page limits actually work for your club, or do you just pick shorter books in busy months and skip the rule?
