Talked to my grandma about book club picks last week and it hit different

My grandma is 78 and she's been in the same book club for over 30 years. She told me their group used to focus on heavy classics like Tolstoy and Steinbeck back in the 90s. But now she says they mostly pick lighter novels because people want an escape from all the news and stress. I argued that books should challenge you, but she pointed out that their club has 4 members over 70 who just want to enjoy a story without feeling drained. It made me rethink my whole approach to recommending books for our own club discussions. Has anyone else here had a club shift towards lighter reads over time?

Guess my deep literary thoughts are just... too heavy for book club snacks...

Wait, didn't your friend's book club once kick out a guy for bringing a thesaurus to snack time?
