Shoutout to the guy in my Tuesday book club who told me to stop summarizing the plot and start asking why the author wrote it that way
He said "nobody here needs a recap, we all read it, tell us what you think it means," so now I write down 3 discussion questions before every meeting and we actually argue about the book instead of nodding along, has anyone else had a club member call them out like that?
The part about writing down 3 questions before every meeting is the real gold here, but nobody's mentioned what happens when the questions flop. I tried that in my club and about half the time my questions were too broad, like "what did the ending mean," and everyone just stared at me. The ones that actually worked were weirdly specific, like "why did the author put the flashback on page 12 instead of the start," because then people had to dig into the text instead of giving their vibe on the whole thing. The guy in your club basically handed you a format, so maybe test which style of question gets the most pushback from your group.
