Reading a chapter out loud to my cat fixed my comprehension problem
I kept zoning out during dense nonfiction books. My book club picked a 400 page history of the transcontinental railroad and I was completely lost by page 50. One night I started reading aloud just to stay awake and my cat walked in. I finished the whole chapter without drifting off. Now I do it every night in my living room in Portland and I actually remember what I read. Has anyone else tried reading out loud to get through tough sections?

Read a study a while back about how reading aloud forces your brain to process information differently than silent reading. It has something to do with the motor activity of speaking and hearing your own voice making the material stick better. I tried it with a dense chapter on soil science for my garden club and it worked way better than I expected. My dog just looked confused but I got through it.

My cat yowled at me the first time I tried this, but after three chapters he just curled up and fell asleep, so I figure at least one of us was paying attention. You make a good point, @miab87, and it makes me wonder if we're all just one small habit shift away from actually getting through the tough stuff in life.
