Pro tip: our pick for March fell apart 40 pages in, and now the club won't trust my suggestions
I pitched a 380 page novel for our March meetup at the library on Elm Street and it went bad fast. Twelve people showed up, and by page 40 about half of them were flipping ahead to see if it got better. One guy just closed it and started scrolling on his phone, which honestly said more than any review. Turns out the book had a 2.9 rating online and I never checked because a friend swore by it. I apologized, we switched to a short story collection for April, and now people keep asking me if I vetted it first. How do you all test a pick before you put it in front of the group?
Man, that stinks, and I feel for you because a friend's word is usually how anyone finds books. Honestly checking the rating online first would have saved you, but I get why you trusted the rec. Maybe ask two or three members to read the first 50 pages before you lock in the next pick.
