Paid $45 for a "rare" first edition at a garage sale turned out to be a book club reprint
Got all excited last Saturday thinking I scored big on this old sci fi novel. Dude was asking $60 but I talked him down to $45 cause the dust jacket had a small tear. Got home and looked up the publishing info inside and it's not a true first edition at all. Just a cheaper book club version from the 70s. Worth maybe $5. Feel like a total idiot. Anyone else get burned on a deal like this?

Man I paid $50 for what I thought was a signed copy of a Stephen King book at a flea market once, ended up being a fake signature someone scribbled with a ballpoint pen. It's funny how quick we get caught up in the story someone tells us about an item instead of checking the facts ourselves. Seems like half the time the real deal is just knowing what to look for, not how fast you can hand over your cash.

Did you check if the dust jacket had a book club price printed on the inside flap before you bought it?
