Our book club had to pick between two endings for the same novel

Last month we read a book that had an alternate ending published online. Half the group wanted to discuss the official ending and half wanted the alternate one. We ended up voting on it and the alternate won by 2 votes. The debate got SO heated that we spent 45 minutes arguing about which ending was more true to the characters. Has anyone else had this split in a book club where picking one version ruined the experience for the other side?

right so our book club had a fight over this exact thing last year and i literally picked the wrong day to host because i could not handle the chaos. i got so stressed trying to keep it civil that i accidentally spilled red wine all over my white couch and everyone had to stop arguing to help me clean it up. looking back i think we should have just read both endings and compared them without trying to pick a winner, but then again half my group still holds grudges over it so maybe not. honestly book clubs are just an excuse for people to get heated about fictional characters living rent free in our heads.

Wait, are you saying the wine spill was a blessing in disguise? Because I would've just let them fight it out.
