Our book club almost fell apart over a single character choice in 'The Dutch House'
Last month, our group in Austin spent the whole meeting arguing about whether the main character was being selfish or just realistic. One person said they'd never forgive him for leaving his sister, another said it was the only smart move. We got so stuck we almost voted to drop the book entirely. I suggested we each write down one scene that changed our mind about him, then read them aloud. Hearing the specific moments, like the 'peach tree' quote, made us see the layers we'd missed. Has your group ever used a trick like that to get past a big disagreement?

We once had everyone pick a single line that stuck with them, which really helped break the deadlock!

Oh man that's a solid idea. We got stuck once and I had everyone just say the one thing they kept thinking about, even if it seemed small. It cut through all the overthinking instantly because people weren't trying to sum up their whole argument. Suddenly we had real starting points to work from instead of just circling the same old debate. That little shift totally changed the energy in the room.
