I paid $75 for a used copy of a book I called overrated for two years
I have been the loudest person in my book club against this one novel for about two years now. Every meeting I would bring it up and say it was style over substance, that people only liked it because a celebrity put it on a list, all that stuff. Then last month a copy showed up at a garage sale near my place in Boise for $75, first edition with the dust jacket intact, and I bought it mostly to prove myself right. I read the whole thing in four sittings. The part I kept complaining about, the slow middle section, is actually where all the setup for the ending lives, and I completely missed that because I skimmed it the first time on a library copy. I showed up to the next meeting ready to argue and instead I had to sit there and admit the book got me. Cost me $75 and my whole reputation as the guy who hates everything. The club president said he wants a written apology now. Has anyone else had to walk back a strong opinion after buying the thing they complained about?
