I finally looked up how many books Toni Morrison wrote after my book club argued about it for an hour

We were discussing 'Beloved' and someone said she only wrote four novels. Another person swore it was seven. I pulled out my phone right there at the table and checked. It's eleven. Eleven novels. We were all way off. The whole debate was pointless because none of us even had the basic fact right. Has your club ever gotten stuck on something that a two-second Google search could have solved?

My book club once spent twenty minutes debating if Atticus Finch was a real person from history. Someone was mixing him up with a civil rights lawyer, and we all just ran with it. We had three lawyers at the table and nobody thought to just check. We finally did, and the silence was so loud you could hear our collective brain cells crying.

Seriously? It's a book club, not a court case. So you guys got a fictional lawyer mixed up with a real one for a few minutes. It's a funny story, not a tragedy. People get stuff wrong all the time, that's how you learn. I bet the conversation was more interesting than just listing facts.

That whole mix-up probably made you guys think about the real lawyers in a different way though. Like, what makes a fictional character feel more real than some actual historical figure? The story does most of the work.
