I finally got our book club to stop arguing by making everyone write down their main point before speaking.

After three meetings of circular debates over 'The Overstory', I started a rule where each person has to jot their core argument on a notecard first, which cut our pointless bickering in half because it forced us to actually think.

Pointless bickering" over a book club seems a bit dramatic. It's just people talking about a story, not a court case. The notecard thing sounds like extra homework to me.

Been there. The trick is to set one rule at the start, like "no interrupting." If someone goes off topic, just say "let's circle back to chapter three." The notecard thing is overkill, but jotting down one quote you liked keeps things moving. Stops it from just being people waiting for their turn to talk.

Imagine needing a rulebook just to talk about a book.
