Hardcover vs paperback for book clubs - hardcover wins every time

I brought my paperback copy of The Vanishing Half to book club and by page 200 the spine was cracked and half the pages were falling out. Meanwhile my friend's hardcover from the library looked perfect after we finished. Has anyone else stopped buying paperbacks for discussions?

Honestly that sucks, hardcovers really do hold up way better.

Yeah, I read somewhere that the glue in paperbacks just dries out and cracks after a few years, especially in humid places. @cameronb52, that's exactly why I switched to hardcovers for anything I want to keep around.
