Did I really need to pre-read every book before my club meets?

For like 3 years I thought I had to finish every single book before our monthly meeting at the downtown library. Then one night I showed up having only read 50 pages of a 400 page novel and our host just laughed and said most people skim or skip sections. It blew my mind that half the group just reads summaries and discussions online. Am I the only one who was over-preparing this whole time?

Feel you on this one... I spent two years reading every word and stressing out if I didn't finish. Found out later the club leader herself sometimes just watched the movie adaptation and faked her way through. Nobody judges as hard as we think they do.

Tbh you just made me feel a lot better about the time I skimmed the last 200 pages of a fantasy novel because I couldn't keep all the fake kingdoms straight. I told the book club I really liked the way the author wrapped up the war subplot, which I only knew about from a wiki summary I read in the grocery store parking lot. Nobody even blinked, they just nodded and went on to complain about the bread baking scene.
