Watched a new guy struggle with a 2-inch flange weld for a week, then it clicked after he switched to a 7018 rod.

He was using a 6010 and couldn't get the puddle to behave on the old steel. Has anyone else seen a simple electrode change make that big a difference for a learner?

Yeah, I used to think rod choice was overrated for beginners.

My uncle's shop only stocks 7018 for trainees... says it builds better habits from day one.

Sounds harsh, but he's not wrong about the discipline part.
