Walked through the old power plant in Gary, Indiana last month

I was there to pick up a part for a job (long story) and they let me look around the boiler room. The old riveted seams on the main drum are something you just don't see anymore, everything's welded now. It made me think about the guys who put that together with hammers and chokes. Anyone else miss seeing that kind of craft, or is it just me being sentimental?

Gary, Indiana? You're a braver soul than me. I'd be less worried about the rivets and more worried about the ghosts of angry steelworkers judging my life choices. That place looks like it could fall apart if you sneeze too hard. Still, you gotta respect the old hammer-and-choke work. Those guys built things to outlive them, not just until the next software update.

Actually, those rivets are probably stronger than a lot of modern welds. They don't get brittle with age like old welds can. Seen it on old bridges too. The metal around the rivet can fail before the rivet itself lets go. That craft wasn't just for looks.
